Just a pic a day, more or less, from The Great Land, and maybe a few from Yukon and BC, too.

South-central Alaska doesn't have a huge diversity of birds, but an encounter with a Steller's Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) is always memorable.

Devil's Club is ubiquitous in the woods of south-central Alaska. It is often one of the first harbingers of our all too short fall.

Independence Mine is located north of the Hatcher Pass Road close to the summit. It's usually winter up here by the end of September, and last year was no exception. A plus- I can see the peaks in this area from out in front of my house.

The Turnagain Arm mudflats are accessible from several points along the Hope Cutoff road for about four miles/6.5 kilometers before you reach the village of Hope.  This body of water has the largest tidal range in the United States- on average about 30 feet/9.2 meters.  That ought to give anyone pause who might think about venturing onto the mudflats, which are the site of several rescue efforts to free stuck adventurers every year.  Sadly, some are not successful.

The birch and willow in Alaska have leaves that on the right fall day blaze like flames. September 25th was one of those days.

This Black-billed Magpie (Pica pica) hung around 10 feet/three meters away for 20 minutes or so while I was at a rest area.  I think it was waiting for me to feed it.

Alaska's fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) is usually "fuzzed out" by mid-September, meaning that the blooms are gone and the emptying seed pods make the plant look like wild cotton candy. Every so often, though, you'll spot a late-bloomer and the fleeting days of late summer in the Great Land come to life again.

That water is the 32.1 (F)/0.1 (C) degrees that it looks. A week later later as this is posted, I'm sure there are ice shelves along its banks. Winter comes on fast here.

I hopped out of the car to shoot what looked like a dramatic sunset as we drove along the Alaska Highway bypass to the west of Whitehorse, Yukon.  I didn't know until I arrived home that the throwaway shot of a ridgeline off to the south was a far better pic.
